Talking food + florals with the founder of LA’s sweetest boutique catering company, Valleybrink Road. Barrett Prendergast—chef, lifestyle curator + mom—invites us inside her home workspace and reveals the creative process behind her beautiful arrangements + handmade gift boxes (as well as the simplest recipe for relaxation).
What do you love most about what you do?
The creativity, the beauty, and the freedom. Each day is something new. A different flower, a new ingredient, a place I have never been before. Things are always changing and evolving which keeps it exciting and fresh.
What inspires you?
I feel so blessed to be in California. The landscape, the produce, nature… so many beautiful colors and textures inspiring each and every day.
What are your favorite flowers, to give and to receive?
Ranunculus, Garden Roses, and Peonies. Even just a single stem of one of these can make a huge statement and put a smile on someone’s face.
Your beautiful gift boxes are the sweetest way to send a thank you. Can you tell us about the process of making them?
First I start with the theme, whether it be a sweet box, beauty box, celebration box, etc, and then spend time curating the products that will be included. I want items that are beautifully packaged and also wonderful products. Then, we fill our custom wood boxes with filling, tie a burlap ribbon around it, and finish the bow with a letterpress tag. We then make a beautiful flower arrangement to place into the box. Finally, we add the flower arrangement and products to the box and we are ready to brighten someone’s day!
How does LR fit into your daily life?
The LR vibe is the everyday vibe, which is what I am all about. I love that the shoes and accessories go effortlessly with my dresses and jeans, and are comfortable to wear all day long as I am running around.
Can you tell us more about your transition from the fashion world to the food + floral industry?
When I was 29, my husband and I closed the handbag line we had for two years. I was in transition and kept asking myself, “What do I really love?”. Everything kept coming back to food, entertaining, cooking. So, I decided to change course. I worked in a restaurant and for some catering companies, started a food blog, and a few months later Valleybrink Road was born. Best decision I ever made was so to not be afraid to start over and set out on a new path.
What is your favorite way to escape the city for a day?
Ojai. It is the best escape from the hustle bustle of LA. A day or two up at Ojai Rancho Inn, exploring the cute little town, and just driving around. We love it.
What is something that makes you proud?
What is your favorite way to relax after a long day?
A glass of wine. A bowl of pasta.
What advice would you offer to women seeking to find the right balance between busy schedules and maintaining a healthy lifestyle?
Take one day at a time and try to give yourself a little credit every once in a while. It is all a work in progress.
