9 Interior Design Tricks From London & Lisbon

Decor inspiration from a blink-and-you-miss-it trip to London and Lisbon. Follow along for the techniques, tips, and secrets I can't wait to try at home.

1. Palette Matching

Think about the interplay of your wall color and the cut flowers you choose. I saw the most gorgeous orangey-red roses against a beautiful nude backdrop at Edward Bulmer Paint. Also their signature “Invisible Green” paint with pale daffodils in the foreground. I tend to choose flowers just based on what I like, but it’s nice to be more thoughtful about how they pair with wall colors.

2. Office Tablecloths

Courtesy of Penny Morrison — use a tablecloth on your work desk. Such a lovely idea I’m going to try. Genius!

3. Painted Edging

Add some edging to furniture to make it so special, like on this desk from Robert Kime. Tess Newall has a decorative painting course launching soon on Create Academy and I cannot wait!

4. Potted Muscari

Muscari is a bulb flowering plant I hadn’t seen before. But once I noticed them at Soane Britain I started to see them everywhere. I love their quirky little stems and white or periwinkle flowers. The delicate blooms remind me of our embroidered Kennedy jacket, restocking this July.

5. Special Seat

Upholster just a cushion, as seen at Studio Faeger. How cute is this idea? Such an unexpected design element. And if you have a very expensive fabric you are using this saves money too!

6. Crochet Lace Curtains

Our crochet set was inspired by a curtain we saw in Italy, but I saw so many beautiful curtains in Lisbon peeking out from glass doorways. Source a crochet or lace piece vintage on Etsy and have a bit of play with a pretty curtain. Our Jo dress works, too!

7. Unexpected Patterns

Look for pattern and inspo everywhere. On the ceiling, on a little door handle and even on the gorgeous sardine cans of Lisbon. These have me itching for stripes! Loved seeing these sweet tins that matched our Ellis and Orion perfectly.

8. High Gloss

Gloss! I am loving shiny things lately: high gloss paints and slick tiles. Of all the beautiful tiles in Lisbon these simple shiny brown tiles are my favorite. Makes me think of our perfect patent Mary Jane, Ginger.

9. Cutouts

Cutout patterns on metal gates and inset doors caught my eye all around Lisbon. I’m loving perforation at the moment. Especially as I cruised the city in our Demi with its delicate eyelet design. We are sold out. But our restock is on the way so please sign up to snag a pair!
